MOVING OUT OF SCARE CITY ~ WEEK 2 (Sunday, Nov. 9th)

As I mentioned in the post about All Saints Day, we would be working through a series called "Moving out of Scare City"... Living in the Abundance of Christ

"The sense that there is not enough drives greed, fear and exclusionary behavior. We begin to live in "Scare City" where it seems that death, starvation, feelings of being overwhelmed and swallowed up can lurk around every corner. The Good News is that this is an illusion. A spiritual journey into the truth of abundance offers us an alternative vision of where to live our lives. This series will have us "Moving out of Scare City" and traveling to the vast, open habitats of God's abounding grace as we commit in our stewardship to an abundant future for this church."

Pretty excited by this concept, but very challenged by it as well. Some things seem to really come forward in the scripture and make the design of the worship simple. But the visuals on this one were starting to come forward, but the bird banners would have to go... we would miss them, very beautiful. But, they didn't really fit with the concept going forward. So, back to the banner board we go! Scare City didn't look scary enough.

Before Marcia joined us for her 5-week residency, our committee had broken up into teams of 2 with about 4-5 members on each. This was to try to alleviate burn out for the project director, so my team was Scare City and Nancy's team would look to Advent. With the residency, workshop, banners for All Saints Day... we had a lot on our plates! I consulted with some members, but some of my members had other duties pertaining to the workshop, so I consult with a few of my team members, Jackie and Marcia as well... Scare City was created. Newspaper Banners... that's right, the headlines and the ads of our all consuming world! These banners were pieces of newspaper with duct tape on the back to reinforce it and provide strength and stability for hanging. I decided to use a little asymmetry in this design, we usually stick pretty symmetrical with our designs since there are two walls. But, this time I was trying to represent the light of Christ. I could was given the idea by Marcia to add rays to one banner, and I decided to take that idea and spin it a little bit. One banner has yellow to white ombre in acrylic with yellow tulle and silver duct tape on it... "Light of Christ" breaking though the abundance of our world!

"Artist Statement: The newspaper banners are a representation of Scare-City; an everyday thing full of juxtaposing themes of fearful headlines and material consumption. In a world so full of distractions, it is easy to get caught up in the day to day and ignore the things we fear the most. In this time of stewardship, we are reminded of the abundance of Christ's love. We will come out of the "rubble", the light will build and build with the addition of lanterns, the yellow line breaking through the headlines represents the light of Christ moving through our world reminding us of God's abounding grace!"
