WDSE HOUSTON ~ TUESDAY VERBAL ARTS

MOVING OUT OF SCARE CITY ~ WEEK 2 (Sunday, Nov. 9th)

As I mentioned in the post about All Saints Day, we would be working through a series called "Moving out of Scare City"... Living in the Abundance of Christ

"The sense that there is not enough drives greed, fear and exclusionary behavior. We begin to live in "Scare City" where it seems that death, starvation, feelings of being overwhelmed and swallowed up can lurk around every corner. The Good News is that this is an illusion. A spiritual journey into the truth of abundance offers us an alternative vision of where to live our lives. This series will have us "Moving out of Scare City" and traveling to the vast, open habitats of God's abounding grace as we commit in our stewardship to an abundant future for this church."

Pretty excited by this concept, but very challenged by it as well. Some things seem to really come forward in the scripture and make the design of the worship simple. But the visuals on this one were starting to come forward, but the bird banners would have to go... we would miss them, very beautiful. But, they didn't really fit with the concept going forward. So, back to the banner board we go! Scare City didn't look scary enough.

Before Marcia joined us for her 5-week residency, our committee had broken up into teams of 2 with about 4-5 members on each. This was to try to alleviate burn out for the project director, so my team was Scare City and Nancy's team would look to Advent. With the residency, workshop, banners for All Saints Day... we had a lot on our plates! I consulted with some members, but some of my members had other duties pertaining to the workshop, so I consult with a few of my team members, Jackie and Marcia as well... Scare City was created. Newspaper Banners... that's right, the headlines and the ads of our all consuming world! These banners were pieces of newspaper with duct tape on the back to reinforce it and provide strength and stability for hanging. I decided to use a little asymmetry in this design, we usually stick pretty symmetrical with our designs since there are two walls. But, this time I was trying to represent the light of Christ. I could was given the idea by Marcia to add rays to one banner, and I decided to take that idea and spin it a little bit. One banner has yellow to white ombre in acrylic with yellow tulle and silver duct tape on it... "Light of Christ" breaking though the abundance of our world!

"Artist Statement: The newspaper banners are a representation of Scare-City; an everyday thing full of juxtaposing themes of fearful headlines and material consumption. In a world so full of distractions, it is easy to get caught up in the day to day and ignore the things we fear the most. In this time of stewardship, we are reminded of the abundance of Christ's love. We will come out of the "rubble", the light will build and build with the addition of lanterns, the yellow line breaking through the headlines represents the light of Christ moving through our world reminding us of God's abounding grace!"

MOVING OUT OF SCARE CITY ~ ALL SAINTS DAY (week 1)

The month of November is the beginning of our stewardship season and we are doing a sermon series called "Moving Out of ScareCity". For the first week of the series, the art team decided to design 2 banners with birds drawn on them, the birds represent a loved one that has gone to the Church Triumphant. We asked the congregation to write the name of your loved one inside the bird. Those who have gone before have made our lives richer in many ways.

The technique that was stenciling. Our own Nancy Tribolet cut out 4 bird patterns and taught each person on our committee how to stencil the birds on the fabric. It was a very successful technique for what we were doing... it was soft, ethereal, but effective in its appearance. The paint is an acrylic blue color with a hint of gray to it. She provided brushes, transparencies and her expertise. I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn a new painting technique, and I know that the other members of our committee did to... everyone was very open minded about the process and we spent about 4 hours working on stenciling birds to banners.

After the birds were finished, we placed them in the narthex, inviting members of the congregation to sign the banners. I love the way we involved the congregation in this process, everyone responded favorable to the idea. The banners remained on the tables for about 2 Sundays, and then off to final production. The banners themselves measured 9 feet each, and then I added a blue band to either side. The committee felt this would add some contrast to the harsh wall color, and give them banners some pop. I added about 10 feet of sheer fabric to the bottom of the banners giving them an appearance of floating in the clouds, very angelic. These would be the longest banners ever hung on the walls! I found them to be such a beautiful tribute to those we have said goodbye too.

Along with the Banners, Marcia advised Jackie, the committee and other important people on the rest of the service. It was like we were "film makers" as Marcia discusses in her workshop. We tried to make sure everything flowed together and had a purpose. The birds on the banners gave us an opportunity to make our communion Sunday special by offering each person a feather as they received communion by intinction. We also looked ahead in the sermon series "Moving out of ScareCity" and decided to create an anchor image that would be constant in our month of this series, and that is when the lanterns were introduced into the service. On All Saints Day Sunday, we would have one youth member bring in the "Light of Christ" as an Acolyte. The song "I Will Follow You" would be sung by the congregation and choir, as the Acolyte begin her walk down the center aisles, up the stairs to the staged area under the cross. This song would be part of the worship for the entire series. The details in the service were beautiful and special... Joe Weir sang "You Raised Me UP" and brought the congregation to tears. This song was used as inspiration for the banners, and the names and comments written on the birds proved that these people were inspiring!

All Saints Day seemed very easy with all the imagery that the birds provided, the words preached, and the songs sang... just moving

GOSPEL READING: Mark 12: 28-34
NEW TESTAMENT READING:  Hebrews 12: 1-3
SERMON: "Never the Last Word!" by Rev. Jackie Hannan

What next for the weeks to come? Marcia provided an image that would keep it moving. The image below created all sorts of possibilties... Lanterns, wood, brick, paper. This image was used on our screens and also on the front of our Sunday bulletin. So, this image, the song, the lanterns, the addition of Acolytes as the series continued, would add a host of new things to our worship!

A Single Candle and Wooden Cross
Acolyte Lantern ~ This is the primary lantern...

Maria McFee ~ All Day Workshop @ APC

I know I like to joke about the grant being for the ladder that we were able to buy to safely install these banners that we create, but another reason the grant is so important is giving us the opportunity to learn and grow. Jackie felt like our committee, our church, and even herself could grow from the opportunity to bring in someone with a talent for all things Worship... Marcia McFee is our person =)

With the Calvin Grant, we are able to have Marcia McFee for the entire month of November. Saturday, November 1st, 2014 was the big kick off workshop where churches from the area were invited for an all day event 9-3pm covering many important points to create meaningful worship together and how to do it effectively. Marcia guided us through worship first, and then we all dove into Worship Design Studio.

Our team of expert kitchen ladies took on the task of feeding around 60 people for our workshop. They offered coffee, tea & water in the Narthex; Buffet Lunch in the Fellowship Hall with 2 soups, a lovely salad, crackers, bread... and the brownie bites in the Narthex were calling the names of many. I heard compliment after compliment on the food and hospitality at APC. We have some talented and artistic people on our committee, but the culinary arts were commended that day! Thanks to all that helped in the kitchen... it was knocked out of the park! Everything flowed very well. We had a check in table, areas for people to mingle and talk before the worship workshop started. People were friendly, and very excited about the opportunity to learn from this worship leader... I am glad we could host this event!

I will probably have to buy a cup of Javaman Coffee for Heath Vercher, Atascocita United Methodist Church Pianist, he was great! Jumped right in and worked very well with Marcia. Our own Carl Braden and Joe Weir was unable to attend because of an all day production at AHS. We missed them very much, but were thankful for such a great stand in!

I heard good reviews on the workshop and the information that was given. As I move through each Tuesday, I will be typing up something for each night. I have encouraged my teams to attend all these workshops and members of the church as well.

Moving back a week or so... this is the schedule of events & people:
Friday, October 31st: 9AM SETUP AT APC. We will be setting up Tables in the Fellowship Hall & Narthex

Saturday, November 1st: 8AM CALL TIME AT APC.
I need everyone here to get ready for guests arriving for the event. Registration starts @ 9AM! This event ends at 3PM with Lunch.

Sunday, November 2nd: ALL SAINTS DAY.  I am working on finalizing the banners for that day. Will need to install during the week leading up to the weekend. We need 2 people from 8:30am & 4 people from 10:30am services to stand next to communion people and hand a white feather to each member. Anyone have a big lantern?? Any small ones??

Month of November: MOVING OUT OF SCARE-CITY. EMAILS TO COME... PLEASE READ YOUR HANDOUTS

*** Ultimately, this is Marcia's Workshop, but it is up to us to be good hosts =) Let's make people feel welcome, try to help Marcia & Jordan in anyway we can! Most of all, please enjoy what we have before us... A learning opportunity. After each workshop, I would love for each member of our committee to write me an email and tell me your thoughts. Bringing Marcia to APC is part of our grant with Calvin and I want to make the best presentation I can to them in June 2015. Keep in mind the 5 senses in worship as we move through this month with Marcia, also, BRANCH OUT!!!! I would love to see all of you at every workshop, but if you can't please make as many as possible in the Tuesdays to come. ***
